Extrusion of an hydroxyhapatite orbital eyeball implant 9 years after an evisceration

Surgeon: Dr. Remy Estable / Dr. Pierre Escalas

Sourdille Atlantique Ophthalmological Institute Nantes / Saint Herblain

Presentation during the "Oculoplastic Academy" congress in Nantes 2014

Extrusion of an hydroxyhapatite orbital implant can occur years after the evisceration. In this case, the extrusion was discovered 9 years after the previous operation but was probably already existing since 3 or 4 years. This case shows that the extruded surface grows inexorably with time and requires removal of the implant and a dermis fat graft to compensate for the loss of volume.
